I’ll let you into a little secret. There is no such thing as the International Month of Email Marketing. I’ve just made it up. However, just because the celebration is so obviously fake news, it doesn’t mean that all email marketers shouldn’t celebrate it.
January is the perfect month to celebrate everything about email marketing. It represents a time when we can finally take our collective feet off of the gas pedal and take stock of the madness of the busy Q4 sales season.
If you work in online retail, you probably haven’t had a moment to think since the festive rush began all the way back in October with Halloween. The holidays might be the most profitable time of the year for many online retailers — but they are also bloody hard work. They are also incredibly expensive, with all those acquisition marketing costs going through the roof as you compete for sales.
Email marketing is, of course, a retention marketing tool, making it a much cheaper solution to driving revenues. In fact, I would argue, if you are paying money to the various search engines, social networks, and other online advertising channels and you are not using optimized email marketing campaigns to create upsell opportunities and retain existing customers, your business will never see its true potential.
I like to think of email marketing as the profitable component of everything else you do to promote your business. Email marketing in January is your opportunity to really see a return on all that time and money you invested into the holiday selling season.
Along with all those festive sales, your email marketing lists should be fit to burst with the contact details of all those new customers you won over the holiday season. There is so much opportunity in those email lists, but you’ve got to hit them hard and fast because email contacts often have a best before date.
Did you know that the average age of an email address is just 16 months? This is precisely the reason why we need to celebrate email marketing throughout the month of January. We need to hit all those email addresses now while we know they are still fresh.
I know every online retailer understands the importance of optimizing their email marketing strategy, especially at this time of the year. Still, too many of them struggle to prioritize email marketing because they are just too busy or plainly exhausted from the previous quarter’s work.
